Goodbye Von Hoffmann

Well, the time has come for me to move on. September 15 will be my last day at Von Hoffmann. I’ve been looking for another job for a while now, after they fired half the St. Louis office less than two months ago. Too many firings, too much instability, and too little information and direction from upper management resulted in me searching for a job elsewhere. I guess I’m just tired of watching people get fired. It’ll also be a nice pay increase on top of everything. I’ve been dying to write about the whole saga but it’s typically not a good idea to write about anything bad going on in the place where you work. That information is sometimes considered privileged or confidential and termination can result in its dissemination. That fear is, of course, not really an issue for me anymore.
I learned a lot at Von Hoffmann, especially about data warehousing. Rather, I was given the opportunity to teach myself by doing. I modeled a large portion of their source system, built and populated the data warehouse, wrote a ton of ETL jobs with DataStage and have just begun working with the reporting tool. All self-taught. I never planned on leaving this early but I also never planned on many of the decisions that were made by upper management; just goes to show things can change overnight.
So, I’m nervous but excited to be moving on. I’m hoping I enjoy this position and that it can turn into a long-term career at Maritz. It’s worth a try; nothing is gained without calculated risk and this is a risk that I think I can take.
FACT: Chuck Norris doesn't chew gum. Chuck Norris chews tin foil.
