Horde

I’ve been playing around with Horde for the past few days, most of that time was actually spent just trying to get it up and running. It’s a royal pain in the ass to get working, especially when you’re running a slightly out of date version of PHP. In short, I ended up getting it to work after upgrading much of the PHP MySQL stuff (and associated dependencies).

Overall I think it’s really impressive. I’ve been impressed with virtually all the open-source PHP projects I’ve downloaded and use frequently on my website. This blog is, in fact, an open-source PHP project. I’d love to use Horde to replace crappy-ass Outlook but the problem is syncing with a PDA. I’m just about done carrying a PDA; I did it for years but have just begun to think that I really don’t want to carry anything more than my cell phone. I might end up getting a small Palm but that remains to be seen. Traci, on the other hand, still wants to carry her PDA around. That means I reallly need some way to sync it with either Horde or sync Outlook to Horde and then sync her PDA to Outlook. Either way, it’s a pain in the ass. Outlook is prone to so many problems and I’d really just like to get everything centralized for the family.

Anyway, the point is that Horde is very cool, once you get it working. If you have a recent version of PHP with the newer version of the MySQL and PEAR stuff then you might not have the trouble I did getting it work. It’s worth checking out if you run your own website and want to replace Outlook.
