SquirrelMail Back From the Brink?

After doing a bit of research I’ve discovered that there are big changes in the works for SquirrelMail. Recently I’ve raved about the RoundCube project and lamented the current state (and bleak future) of my beloved SquirrelMail. It took some digging but I’ve found the current 1.5 roadmap (on the road toward 2.0) for SquirrelMail and it looks promising. It appears that the development team is implementing a new template architecture which will allow the UI to be completely detached from the core code base. This would allow for manipulation of all aspects of the SquirrelMail interface via templates while still using the solid code base. I’m thinking of this as a “face lift” for SquirrelMail. Although I know there are other webmail clients out there, none of them have looked good enough for me to leave SquirrelMail for (until maybe RoundCube).
I’m now in the enviable position of waiting for a production release of both RoundCube and SquirrelMail 1.5 (or 2.0). Having two products to choose from is definitely better than one. If the SquirrelMail team pulls it off then this will bring SquirrelMail back from the brink of extinction. I have to admit, if I have to choose between the two and the features are on par with one another then I’ll have to choose my trusty SquirrelMail. I’ll be following both products very closely over the next months (or years) and hopefully will be able to begin some testing and evaluation of newer versions of both SquirrelMail and RoundCube soon.
FACT: The grass is always greener on the other side, unless Chuck Norris has been there. In that case the grass is most likely soaked in blood and tears.
