Red Light Camera Scammers Caught

Looks like some US cities have been caught tampering with stoplights to decrease the duration of the yellow light, causing more people to run them, thus generating more revenue.

And they said the cameras were there to make things safer. Right. Check out this article on techdirt.com. Some highlights:

…red light cameras tend to increase the number of accidents because people slam on their brakes to stop in time, leading to rear-ending accidents.

…if cities really wanted to make traffic crossings safer there’s a very simple way to do so: increase the length of the yellow light and make sure there’s a pause before the cross traffic light turns green…

Notice one of the cities caught was Springfield, MO. If you’ll remember I had my own run-in with the red light camera here in St. Louis, Springfield’s next door neighbor. That one cost me $100 and I didn’t even run the light. I turned right on red without coming to a complete stop. I said then that I thought it was a scam and from what I’ve been reading it seems I was right.

Greedy bastards.
